Every now and then, it is my great pleasure to step away from my inspirational blogger vibe and step into other areas to write about. A few weeks ago I had the great pleasure of attending Jimmy’s Ormonde for such an experience where sampling their food was all I had to do or so I thought. December 12th, will probably go down as one of the sweetest evenings that I’ve had in the longest time.

A special evening with my daughter Talisa celebrating her Honours Award for Consumer Studies

I am a big believer that food should not cause strife or stress. The sharing of a meal together should bring contentment to both one’s tummy and one’s heart. I like beautiful flavours, that are comfortable to both the tongue and the tummy because I find that when food is pleasant, satisfying and also surprising, then it somehow lends itself to helping people to drop their guards or to come out from the one’s they hide behind. A great meal can be a channel for a wonderful meeting of minds, hearts and souls.

Oreo Milkshake – No Brainer that was my drink of choice

So there I was at Jimmy’s Ormonde with my daughter Talisa and I only knew one other person at the table which was Taryn Victor (she is the author of the blog Diary of a Whimsical Girl and now one of the beautiful people in my life).

The talented and beautiful Taryn Victor and I.

I did not know the other ten guests at all and I was to share a meal with them. I was a little nervous, not knowing what to expect. To start our evening our waiter ran us through the extensive drinks menu. Drinks are a great ice breaker. And yes, it works even for those of us who do not drink alcohol. Jimmy’s does not serve alcohol so it makes it “the place to meet” for those who prefer to be in an alcohol free environment.

I have two weaknesses in life: dancing and eating anything containing Oreo cookies. To my palate’s pleasure Oreo milkshake was one of the drinks on offer. At that precise moment, in my head I heard DJ Khaled and Justin Bieber singing: “You stick out of the crowd, baby, it’s a no-brainer. It ain’t that hard to choose”. You get the idea of how happy I was. Talisa chose a Ferrero Roche milkshake and other guests also chose form the more traditional milkshake flavours to other more inspired flavours.

With the drinks served and everyone easing into the evening, we were ready for the feasting to begin. When the Cheesy Garlic Rolls made its way to the table the “oohing” and “aahing” accompanied by grins as we looked around the table at each other instantly made us all friends. I love a good salad that is not too complicated in its flavour profile when accompanying other dishes. The fresh Greek salad that was served was just that. Uncomplicated and deliciously satisfying.

What followed was nothing short of merriment on plates, in glasses and around the table. Jimmy’s Ormonde served up platters of prawns in Jimmy’s signature flavours; Kashmiri and Lemon Butter. The South African spirit of Ubuntu kicked in as everyone made sure that each one of us tasted the different flavours on offer.

“Not” Spicy Prawns for those who can’t handle heat

Spicy Prawns for those who need the heat.

If you are someone who loves a good seafood dish, like I do and your better half can’t eat seafood; then Jimmy’s is the place where you can meet each other halfway. In addition to their seafood menu, they also have a selection of chicken and steaks.

Tikka Chicken

I am not a fan of red meat and if I eat it, then I like it to not taste like meat. There are a variety of sauces to choose from when eating chicken or steak at Jimmy’s Ormonde. You can request which sauce you would like your meat to be grilled in. You would be hard pressed to find an eatery as flexible as that.

Jimmy’s sauces are also bottled for purchase.

We had way too much fun and in no time, it was almost eleven o’clock.

My daughter Talisa in the middle with rather accomplished people in the world of food, Amy to her right and Loyiso Mtoba to her left.

Before we left though there was still coffee and dessert to get through. I am not sure how we managed to finish dessert after all the plates of food we had already consumed. It must have been that the staff were so attentive and gracious and the owner was so proud of his establishment and the quality of his food; that we just didn’t want to leave. Dessert was a choice between malva pudding with custard and ice-cream or a decadent chocolate brownie with ice-cream. These desserts were paired with a choice of coffees inspired by middle eastern flavours.

A few months ago, I wrote a post “What’s Food Got To Do With It?” about the pressures I felt as an Indian woman to provide food and entertain in a way that was not personally pleasing to me. I think food is the vehicle that creates wonderful times for families and friends to meet and it should be enjoyable for the cook and host as well as for the guests. On that note, because Jimmy’s Ormonde is also a take-away eatery, they are now on my list of places to order from. As a mother to a daughter with a disability, sometimes what I want to prepare by myself has to be outsourced due to my child needing my attention a little more than usual. Having the option to order a meal that will make everyone happy and delight us a little too (because sometimes we all need a mood lift) , certainly makes Jimmy’s Ormonde one of my favourite eateries in the South of Johannesburg.

You don’t have to only take my word for it. Follow the links about this wonderful evening captured on  Nadia Manjate’s You Tube Channel or read about it on Nothando Mashaba’s Blog, The Diary of a 21st Century Nguni Maiden. The Concious Creative.

Thank you to everyone at Jimmy’s Ormonde, to TNC Marketing and to the one of the nicest group of foodies I’ve had the pleasure of sharing a meal with.

It is half past eleven on Sunday night and I can’t go to bed because I’m so excited. I think I found gift ideas that are so relevant to my family.  As a family with a tween, a teenager and a young adult with a disability who has very  specific likes and dislikes; finding just the right gift that is useful, trendy and guaranteed to illicit squeals of delight on Christmas morning; is not always easy.

I am also awful at shopping for other people. My heart knows how grateful I am and how much I want to express that by giving the right gift; but I feel that I never quite find the perfect gift for my family members and my friends.  If you are anything like me, then this may be a helpful read for you.

1. Funko
This is exciting for so many reasons. My family in different ways are collectors. My son and my brother collect a specific brand of toy cars. I collect books by classic authors like Shakespeare and the Brontë sisters, amongst others. We also collect international soccer memorabilia and salt and pepper sets.

We are collectors. And what better range to start my families new collections than the Funko range which are vinyl figurines based on pop culture. I shrieked with delight when I saw the DC Superheroes collection and the soccer players collection.

Marvel Funko Pop Collectibles

Savannah my daughter who has a disability and struggles with severe anxiety finds comfort in holding small objects that she can relate too. I am sure she will love the ‘Ed Sheeran” figurine. I mean which young women wouldn’t?

With the vast range to choose from for Music Lovers, Movie Lovers, Sports Fans and Series fanatics , I have a feeling that Funko Collectibles are going to become one of our family’s new collection trends.

2. Solo Range of Hybrid Bags
These bags have got me excited because my son Eli spends most of his week between soccer practices, Kumon, School and Scouting. Some days when we pack his backpack for the day,  I feel that I’m packing for a weekend away. It seems that I pack everything but his bed. Going from one extra-mural to the other, we have to ensure that he has the correct clothing, enough food, his phone and school books; if has to eat, work and entertain himself between events. The Solo range has a few options to choose from to hold everything that Eli needs in a day.I am likely to choose between:

The All Star Backpack

The All Star BackPack R1 699,00

Or The Solo Work to Play Backpack

The Work to Play Backpack R999, 00

As a family with a person who uses a wheelchair, we need to carry a few items for her when we leave the house. Especially if we go to parks or family outings, pushing the wheelchair while balancing bags and loose items of her stuff is difficult. We also need a bag that is comfortable for either Michael, Talisa or myself to carry while we push the wheelchair.  This Solo Weekender Backpack might just do the trick.

Last week I shared with you that after colour treating my hair using Inoar’s hair treatments, my hair is still soft and healthy.

This week in my second installment about Blo Bar, I wanted to let you view for yourself the flexibility and skill of Stacey Swanepoel, my hair stylist at the Blo Bar.

All the stylists are widely experienced and amazingly fast. That was what I appreciated the most. The up styles that Stacey created for me were done in under an hour. I’d venture to say that on days when my hair was prepped the day before, then the styling took about forty five minutes.

Stand a chance to win a wash, cut and blow dry to the value of R450 with Stacey Swanepoel from the Blo Bar sponsored by A Million Beautiful Pieces.

To enter choose the style which you like the most from the pictures below and follow the prompts thereafter to enter.

This year I did something that was not at all what I would have thought I would have done. I had my hair washed and set professionally for three months. It was such a spoil. I know that’s the status quo for many people and I can now see why. When Michael Davis, the owner of the Blobar, sponsored my hair treatments and hair styling care by the talented Stacey Swanepoel, I had no idea how appreciative I would be.

I have not done any treatments for my hair in about eighteen years. I probably had a trim every four months or so. Being a mum to three and with Savannah, my eldest requiring medical treatments; my hair care was not a priority. So the experience that the Blobar offered me was amazing to say the least.

Stacey and the team at Blobar Hair Salon have such a great vibe. Every Monday morning I started my week with a delicious cappuccino and a butter cookie while having my hair washed with a very relaxing head massage.

Now I was the type of girl who only bought “off the shelf shampoo”. So it was after a very long time that I was exposing my hair to salon approved hair care products and it was the first time I was introduced to the product brand INOAR. There are a few options within this brand for different hair types. Stacey recommended INOAR’S Argan Plex Shampoo and Conditioner for me.

I’ve always had good hair so I didn’t have to worry about damage before. When Stacey suggested that I have a change of color; something else I have not done in eighteen years, I was concerned about damaging my hair. However since having my new hair colour, my hair has remained healthy and is also shinier and softer. The INOAR range uses Argan oil in it’s makeup, so hair is not just washed but it also undergoes a gentle treatment at the same time.

My natural colour:

My Indola Colour and Inoar Treated Hair..So love this colour

After each wash and set, Stacey used Argan oil to protect and nourish my hair. It’s a little bottle of magic. I experienced no itchiness to my scalp, no split ends and no breakage. Especially as Stacey used a GHD frequently on my hair, I expected some damage. When my hair remained soft and nourished, I was impressed.

INOAR retails for about R550,00 and a pack will last a good few weeks, depending on how often you wash your hair. For me, with Inoar twice a week is sufficient.

Next week: More about the stylist Stacey Swanepoel and pictures of the fabulous hairdos she created for me.

The first six months of this year have been exactly what I wanted it to be: a time to try new experiences. To that end I was fortunate to enjoy a few makeup makeovers, the latest of which was inspired by Bollywood.

I was attending my last event in the Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa Women Empowerment Programme, and at the last-minute I decided to switch dresses and wear a traditional Indian dress otherwise known as a Lehenga.

My lovely makeup artist Michelle Mustoe who had previously “coloured me pretty” for another event was thrown this curve ball literally when I sat to have my makeup done. A true professional that she is, she was undaunted by this change of plans and set to work to prepare me for a night that would be memorable to me forever.

Meyersdal Nail and Beauty Studio are stockists of the Dermafix Range of Skin Care Products with which Michelle prepped my face. The Demafix Dermal Repair is “an exclusive multi vitamin facial treatment” that protects your skin from losing moisture. A really important aspect of using makeup is making sure that your skin doesn’t lose any vitamins and moisture; and if done correctly with the right skin care range and good makeup products that is completely achievable.

As I wrote in my previous blog post “Colour Me Pretty“, Michelle’s preferred cosmetic brand is Kryolan. However for my Bollywood inspired look, Michelle turned to her little tubs of powders from Mac Cosmetics. For those of you who have struggled with powder eye shadows not holding to the lid or if you struggled to blend it easily, it helps to use an eye shadow primer on your eye lids. The primer creates an even, smooth skin surface to hold the eye shadow, and makes blending colours easier.

It was helpful to Michelle that she saw my dress and used the colours and textures as the inspiration for the eye shadow. She blended dark midnight blues with a dark grey shadow to create the heavy, smokey effect but also lightened up towards the inner eye with a burnt orange and gold coloured blend. We decided to go all our dramatic and used a set of longer length false eye lashes, especially towards the outer edges of my eye lids. I already have naturally long lashes so for me this was pretty dramatic and I loved the finished effect. Topping it all off was a bold eye liner blend of pencil and eye shadow. I was thrilled with the end results.

Michelle contoured and highlighted the rest of my face factoring in that I was going to be on stage about ten hours later. I am happy to let you know that ten hours later, apart from a touch of lipstick, I did not need to touch up any other areas of a makeup.

Michelle is an absolute delight to sit for and we had so much fun creating my Bollywood look. For more about Meyersdal Nail and Beauty Studio.

Michelle is also an amazing FX makeup artist.

It’s the last weekend of the Whitney Houston show in Gauteng starring the talented Belinda Davids. I saw the show two weeks ago and if I had the time I would be back in the Theatre of Marcellus at Emperors Palace this weekend.

I can’t stop replaying in my head the moments that gave me goosebumps. Belinda not only hits all the high notes like Whitney but she also delivers those husky low tones that make you believe that Whitney Houston herself is standing before you. I am not a singer by any means but the high energy of the cast and Belinda’s intimacy with them and with the audience; made me and the rest of audience forget ourselves, and we belted out one tune after another following Belinda as best we could.

I don’t want to spoil it for anyone going to the show this weekend; so I’ll say this: there is one song that Belinda sings while a video plays of Whitney singing the same song, and its surreal watching Belinda embody Whitney exactly as she is in the video. I was caught between crying and laughing with joy at how brilliantly Whitney is brought to life in this show without taking anything away from the absolute artist that is Belinda Davids.

The costumes are amazing and throwback to all my favourite Whitney music videos. The cast is phenomenal with amazing solos by each of the musicians that had us cheering and dancing in our seats. I had been singing Exhale (Shoop Shoop) and My Love is Your Love all the way to the show with my daughter, and when Belinda belted out those lyrics…. Oh wow..she did not disappoint.

So if you are looking for a way to warm up while the temperatures plummet in Gauteng, do yourself a favour and go watch The Greatest Love of All. I lost my voice a bit after that show and I’ve been listening to all my Whitney Houston CDs ever since. This was the most touching and respectful tribute to a star that is missed so much by all her fans. “I get so emotional” and you will too.

I’m not shy to admit that I have always had a intimate relationship with make-up. Yet, sadly like most mothers, there were those lean years, when the children were little and their needs took priority over everything else.

Thankfully the lean years have passed and I have been able to fill my drawer with a few mascaras and more than a few tubs of colourful powders and creams with which to adorn my skin. I am also fortunate to be working with the lovely ladies at the Meyersdal Nail and Beauty Studio who have been kind enough to look after my make-up while I am a semi-finalist in the Mrs South Africa competition.

A few weeks ago, their talented make-up artist Michelle Mustoe got me photo ready for a fundraising event at the picturesque Thaba Ya Batswana Eco Hotel and Conference Centre. It was on a Friday evening and I had come through a very long week. My skin was pale and my eyes showed my exhaustion. As I settled into the chair and chatted to Michelle about her career, she got to work dipping her brushes and working her magic.

I loved seeing all Michelle’s little tubs and little pots from different cosmetic houses laid out. Her favorite brand is from the House of Kryolan. I had not used this brand before so I was excited to try it. When Michelle applied the foundation, I was impressed by how creamy and light it felt and how quickly it settled onto my skin. We chatted about blending and using a darker shade for contouring.

For my eyes, we used a lovely glitter powder on the inner and kept the overall look soft and simple. Usually, I apply liquid eye liner for a bold look. This time Michelle used a pencil with gentle soft strokes blended with the eye shadow. Lastly, Michelle applied mascara. Michelle and I are both believers that mascara opens up one’s eyes and completes any look. In Michelle’s experience, she loves the feel and the look that Kryolan’s range of mascara give to lashes. I loved how well it extended my natural lashes and lifted my eyes from tired to “excited and bright”.

Thank you Lizelle Kruger and Michelle Mustoe of the Meyersdal Nail and Beauty Studio for all your support. I love your energy and I appreciate your skill.

I can definitely recommend the ladies at Meyerdal Nail and Beauty Studio to get you photo ready for your next big event.

As a mother to three who had so much going on for several years, I did not get the chance to explore what fashion and beauty trends worked for me. I did not know how to develop a proper care routine for my skin, my make up and my hair. For those of you who follow my blog, you will know that this year has been about exploring new hobbies and personal challenges. I have dedicated one year to myself. Sounds rather selfish when I re-read that. Yet I think it is actually one of the bravest things I have done.

So when I won a make over session with MakeUp Artist to the stars, Ryno Mulder; I was so excited. Then as the day drew closer, I was also a little nervous. Reality is that when you bare your face to someone for a couple hours, and allow them to do your make-up, you bare a little more than your face.

Up close and personal, all your flaws are now visible to someone else and that can be a little disconcerting. But Ryno is a true professional and a genuinely easy going, sweet soul and put me to ease within 10 seconds of meeting him.

I booked the session on the afternoon of my fortieth birthday. It felt right that I mark the day in this way. Sitting just within a window while the sunlight danced outside to the sounds of Indila, a Turkish music artist, I was literally transformed. While Ryno worked and we chatted, I was pleased to realise that I actually knew one or two tricks of the trade such as doing your eye shadow before your foundation and concealer so if any powder falls on the cheek bones, it can be cleaned away.

My greatest issue are these dark circles under my eyes. I think that is a problem that many women have. I knew that I should use a concealer. But which colour concealer? Ryno explained that orange was the concealer to use. The skin under the eye, is the thinnest skin on the face. Usually it is the blood vessels under the skin that for various reasons show through the skin causing the area to appear darker. That hue is a blue-green colour. So in order to conceal it, person like myself must use an opposite colour to blue-green, which in my case is orange. Voila! Now I know instead of bemoaning my dark eyes, I can do something about it.

I had to ask about contouring. Let’s face it, we didn’t really know how important contouring was until Kim Kardashian made women around the globe realise we can all have great cheekbones with the right colours and brush techniques. Ryno said I didn’t need that for day to day make-up. But yes for evening, glitzy events or certain types of photographic shoots, it could be something to try.

For my lips, Ryno used Mac Current Lipliner, Mac High Drama Liquid Lip Colour Ombrèd into Stila Lume Shimmer Liquid Lipstick. Oh my soul! I love lip colours and often when I’m tired, a great lipstick rescues my face from looking completely ashen. This blend was stunning and it lasted way into the night.

When I finally looked at myself in the mirror, my immediate thought was “Wow, I can still recognise my face, yet I look better than I believed I could look”. I wanted to cry but I can’t exactly pin point why I wanted to cry. I will admit, that my the fear of dabbing my face and changing one millimeter of my make-up kept me strong. This experience was big for me.

Many women for many reasons can’t see themselves looking and feeling good because sometimes life is too hard for too long, and we forget what “good” feels like. For me, by surrendering to the process and trusting Ryno to do my make-up the best way he saw fit; I can say that there was not better way to have spent the afternoon of my fortieth birthday. Thank you to SA Mommy Blogger Awards for the prize and Thank you to MakeUp by Ryno for your time and talent.

You can follow him on Facebook & Instagram. Thank you for this wonderful experience Ryno!
