This year I did something that was not at all what I would have thought I would have done. I had my hair washed and set professionally for three months. It was such a spoil. I know that’s the status quo for many people and I can now see why. When Michael Davis, the owner of the Blobar, sponsored my hair treatments and hair styling care by the talented Stacey Swanepoel, I had no idea how appreciative I would be.

I have not done any treatments for my hair in about eighteen years. I probably had a trim every four months or so. Being a mum to three and with Savannah, my eldest requiring medical treatments; my hair care was not a priority. So the experience that the Blobar offered me was amazing to say the least.

Stacey and the team at Blobar Hair Salon have such a great vibe. Every Monday morning I started my week with a delicious cappuccino and a butter cookie while having my hair washed with a very relaxing head massage.

Now I was the type of girl who only bought “off the shelf shampoo”. So it was after a very long time that I was exposing my hair to salon approved hair care products and it was the first time I was introduced to the product brand INOAR. There are a few options within this brand for different hair types. Stacey recommended INOAR’S Argan Plex Shampoo and Conditioner for me.

I’ve always had good hair so I didn’t have to worry about damage before. When Stacey suggested that I have a change of color; something else I have not done in eighteen years, I was concerned about damaging my hair. However since having my new hair colour, my hair has remained healthy and is also shinier and softer. The INOAR range uses Argan oil in it’s makeup, so hair is not just washed but it also undergoes a gentle treatment at the same time.

My natural colour:

My Indola Colour and Inoar Treated Hair..So love this colour

After each wash and set, Stacey used Argan oil to protect and nourish my hair. It’s a little bottle of magic. I experienced no itchiness to my scalp, no split ends and no breakage. Especially as Stacey used a GHD frequently on my hair, I expected some damage. When my hair remained soft and nourished, I was impressed.

INOAR retails for about R550,00 and a pack will last a good few weeks, depending on how often you wash your hair. For me, with Inoar twice a week is sufficient.

Next week: More about the stylist Stacey Swanepoel and pictures of the fabulous hairdos she created for me.

The first six months of this year have been exactly what I wanted it to be: a time to try new experiences. To that end I was fortunate to enjoy a few makeup makeovers, the latest of which was inspired by Bollywood.

I was attending my last event in the Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa Women Empowerment Programme, and at the last-minute I decided to switch dresses and wear a traditional Indian dress otherwise known as a Lehenga.

My lovely makeup artist Michelle Mustoe who had previously “coloured me pretty” for another event was thrown this curve ball literally when I sat to have my makeup done. A true professional that she is, she was undaunted by this change of plans and set to work to prepare me for a night that would be memorable to me forever.

Meyersdal Nail and Beauty Studio are stockists of the Dermafix Range of Skin Care Products with which Michelle prepped my face. The Demafix Dermal Repair is “an exclusive multi vitamin facial treatment” that protects your skin from losing moisture. A really important aspect of using makeup is making sure that your skin doesn’t lose any vitamins and moisture; and if done correctly with the right skin care range and good makeup products that is completely achievable.

As I wrote in my previous blog post “Colour Me Pretty“, Michelle’s preferred cosmetic brand is Kryolan. However for my Bollywood inspired look, Michelle turned to her little tubs of powders from Mac Cosmetics. For those of you who have struggled with powder eye shadows not holding to the lid or if you struggled to blend it easily, it helps to use an eye shadow primer on your eye lids. The primer creates an even, smooth skin surface to hold the eye shadow, and makes blending colours easier.

It was helpful to Michelle that she saw my dress and used the colours and textures as the inspiration for the eye shadow. She blended dark midnight blues with a dark grey shadow to create the heavy, smokey effect but also lightened up towards the inner eye with a burnt orange and gold coloured blend. We decided to go all our dramatic and used a set of longer length false eye lashes, especially towards the outer edges of my eye lids. I already have naturally long lashes so for me this was pretty dramatic and I loved the finished effect. Topping it all off was a bold eye liner blend of pencil and eye shadow. I was thrilled with the end results.

Michelle contoured and highlighted the rest of my face factoring in that I was going to be on stage about ten hours later. I am happy to let you know that ten hours later, apart from a touch of lipstick, I did not need to touch up any other areas of a makeup.

Michelle is an absolute delight to sit for and we had so much fun creating my Bollywood look. For more about Meyersdal Nail and Beauty Studio.

Michelle is also an amazing FX makeup artist.

Here I am in the final week of semi final judging for the Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa Women Empowerment Programme. I’m not nervous. I’m both excited and nostalgic as I think about my best moments so far.I’ve lost weight and found my energy and strength again. I’ve been forced to take better care of myself and that has been good for me. In my motivational talks to women, I always drive home the point that we must be kind to ourselves first but I did not know how to do that before this competition.

I’ve also met amazing people. The staff and owners at the BloBar and Meyersdal Nail and Beauty Studio with their vibrancy and laughter was always refreshing. My cousins too have taught me so much about belief and empowerment and love. Through their companies, Shipping and General Transport and Supreme Rubber Rollers they gifted me the opportunity to “do me” by sponsoring me for this competition.

My sister-in-law took care of all my social media so that I could juggle everything else. My mum, my aunts and my girlfriends pulled together outfits like fairy godmothers. My husband and children have been so supportive and respectful of the times I had to be away from them.

People have written to me or called me or stopped me at events to tell me that they admire me for doing this competition at this age and as a mother of three. Women have shared that they are re-evaluting their lives and weighing up what challenges they would like to tackle.

It makes me glad to know that my journey to explore my womanhood in this way is meaningful to other women too. It’s been a wonderful opportunity and I am proud of myself for doing this.

I also recognise too that I am not on a journey of discovery because I already found myself at the age of twenty-two years old. I knew then who I was and what I was made off.

This journey this year has been about showing my second daughter Talisa that life is more than just facing down one challenge after another. It’s also about enjoying the moment and having a sense of adventure. I got to step out of my comfort zone and meet people I would not ordinarily have met.

The other semi-finalists are each amazing and powerful in the own right. I couldn’t have been amongst a group of more beautiful ladies both inside and out.

So here’s to them; for their drive, their determination, their friendship and our sisterhood. I will be sad that after Friday we will never all be together again. The top twenty-five Mrs South Africa finalists will be announced and their lives will never be the same.

In all the possibilities that lie before me, I am sure of this: I’ve given all of me to the people that count and to the opportunities that were presented to me. I know for sure who I am, and that is my gift to me.

Be True To You, Always.

I’m not shy to admit that I have always had a intimate relationship with make-up. Yet, sadly like most mothers, there were those lean years, when the children were little and their needs took priority over everything else.

Thankfully the lean years have passed and I have been able to fill my drawer with a few mascaras and more than a few tubs of colourful powders and creams with which to adorn my skin. I am also fortunate to be working with the lovely ladies at the Meyersdal Nail and Beauty Studio who have been kind enough to look after my make-up while I am a semi-finalist in the Mrs South Africa competition.

A few weeks ago, their talented make-up artist Michelle Mustoe got me photo ready for a fundraising event at the picturesque Thaba Ya Batswana Eco Hotel and Conference Centre. It was on a Friday evening and I had come through a very long week. My skin was pale and my eyes showed my exhaustion. As I settled into the chair and chatted to Michelle about her career, she got to work dipping her brushes and working her magic.

I loved seeing all Michelle’s little tubs and little pots from different cosmetic houses laid out. Her favorite brand is from the House of Kryolan. I had not used this brand before so I was excited to try it. When Michelle applied the foundation, I was impressed by how creamy and light it felt and how quickly it settled onto my skin. We chatted about blending and using a darker shade for contouring.

For my eyes, we used a lovely glitter powder on the inner and kept the overall look soft and simple. Usually, I apply liquid eye liner for a bold look. This time Michelle used a pencil with gentle soft strokes blended with the eye shadow. Lastly, Michelle applied mascara. Michelle and I are both believers that mascara opens up one’s eyes and completes any look. In Michelle’s experience, she loves the feel and the look that Kryolan’s range of mascara give to lashes. I loved how well it extended my natural lashes and lifted my eyes from tired to “excited and bright”.

Thank you Lizelle Kruger and Michelle Mustoe of the Meyersdal Nail and Beauty Studio for all your support. I love your energy and I appreciate your skill.

I can definitely recommend the ladies at Meyerdal Nail and Beauty Studio to get you photo ready for your next big event.
